Can racism be erased from the minds of the population?
Defining Racism.
Racism can be described as the belief in a person’s mind, that another race is inferior, or, in some cases, the belief that another race is superior. Its the internal belief in a person’s mind that another individual can be intellectually deficient simply as a result of being from a particular race, or in a few cases, that another individual is intellectually superior as a result of their race.
Racism Cause 1: Politics.
In Guyana, we have had a history of politics that mired into a race issue since the initial days of independence. What was once a political issue, has now blossomed into a race disagreement. Its now “us vs them.” However, before this hostile political climate, most Guyanese seems to forget that all people of Guyana had lived relatively in peace with each other. In this case, the racist hate that exist, is a created diversion, and not a natural production of the people.
Racism Cause 2: Generalizations
You’ve experienced it. Someone was very nasty to you. They cut you off in traffic, and probably show you the finger sign that tells you what they want they really want to say. Or someone at work just has a terrible attitude, and because these persons are from a particular race, suddenly, in anger, you’re now cursing at that entire race. “These people” are all like that, is the ending conclusion. However, when its someone of your own race that engages in those same terrible acts, the same criticism is not levied. Its conveniently ignored. This is called “Generalization,” and its classing an entire people based on the actions of a few of them. Every race has its good and its bad. There are terrible people all over the world. Every race has criminals, killers and rapists. Its not localized to only a particular people.
Racism Cause 3: Lack of Faith.
This is by far, the most potent reason for racism. Every person on this Earth has been created for one reason. That reason is to live a good life, say your prayers, and be of benefit to others around you. People the world over comes in different body masses, colors, languages, cultures and each will have their unique way of living. Each race will have they unique ways of expression, music, arts, and customs. All of these factors are to be used to identify each other, and only for the identifying each other. However, each cultural setting will have an initial negative reaction to someone else culture. That’s normal and that will pass with time. With the increasing small world we are living in, its never more important to respect someone’s customs as you expect them to respect yours.
To finish this article off, every person on the earth has the same purpose as you, regardless of where they are from and what they look like. Absorb this concept into your minds and you, and the world around you, would be a better place.
