There are not many books that remain popular after more than a hundred years after being initially published, and James Allen’s “As a Man Thinketh” is one of these rare published masterpieces.
Published in 1903, the entire theme of the book was based on a verse of the Bible, Book of Proverbs 23:7 which in part reads:
“For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he.”
Every emotion in a person’s life can be traced back to their way of thinking, and every result in a person’s life, can be traced back to initial emotions that produced the ultimate results. These results can be progressive and helpful, or these results can be depressive and destructive to a person’s psyche.
By all means, James Allen so skillfully articulates the fact that a positive result such as happiness is a choice. A person can choose to be happy, depending on the thoughts that individual chooses to harbour in their minds, and on the contrary, a person can choose to be unhappy, depressive, and worrisome, depending on which depressive thoughts are conceived of and continuously nurtured. The only difference between these two states of mind is the kinds of thoughts that one holds close to themselves. To move from one state to the other, is a simple mindswitch. A mindswtich can move an individual from depression to happiness by the individual deciding to be happy, irrespective of circumstances.
This concept applies to all results in the lives of people. James Allen spoke of a person’s thoughts and the effect on their character, on their personal or business success, their health and body, on high achievers, and on visions and ideals.
Each one can either be a success or a failure in a person’s life, depending on which mindswitch they choose, which thoughts they keep, and which thoughts they expel from their minds. To quote James Allen:
“All that a man achieves and all that he fails to achieve is the direct result if his own thoughts.”
